The following are some destinations a little further away, but no less interesting.

Duong Lam Ancient Village
Located about 50 km from the center of Hanoi, in Son Tay town, next to National Highway 32, this village is one of the rare places that has preserved the original structure and lifestyle of an ancient Vietnamese village for over 300 years. Duong Lam boasts valuable historical and cultural relics, including Phung Hung Temple, Ngo Quyen Temple, and the temple dedicated to the scholar Giang Van Minh… Notably, many ancient houses still offer traditional village meals, allowing visitors to order food and rest there.

Directions: By motorbike or car, follow the Lang Hoa Lac road to the intersection with Road 21 Xuan Mai – Son Tay (turn right), continue for 12km along this road to the traffic lights at the intersection in Son Tay town. Van Phuc silk has many beautiful and long-standing patterns, considered among the best in Vietnam, and was once chosen to make clothing for the royal court. If you can buy authentic Van Phuc silk, the quality is very good. However, in many shops in Van Phuc, lower-quality Chinese silk is mixed in and sold under the name of Van Phuc silk, so customers need to choose carefully. Van Phuc silk usually doesn’t have overly colorful designs, and when burned, it smells like burning hair and the ash crumbles into crumbs.

Directions: From the new Khuat Duy Tien road, or commonly known as Ring Road 3, coming from Nguyen Trai, turn left following the signs onto Le Van Luong extended road. Drive for about 10 minutes to the intersection with Road 70 and the Van Phuc new urban area, turn left again for about 1 km and you will reach the village.

Bat Trang Pottery Village
Located on the left bank of the Red River, Bat Trang pottery village belongs to Gia Lam district, more than 10km southeast of the center of Hanoi. Bat Trang pottery village has existed for over 500 years. Bat Trang pottery has long been famous for its beautiful, glossy glaze, and was once purchased in large quantities by European traders. Today, in addition to traditional products, Bat Trang artisans have created many eye-catching decorative and household items to suit consumer tastes. During a visit to Bat Trang, tourists can try their hand at pottery making to create their own products. The service costs 15,000-30,000 VND per painting or sculpting session (without taking the finished product home). If you take the finished product, the average price is 40,000-60,000 VND depending on whether the product is taken immediately or fired. Workshops offer home delivery services for customers who don’t want to wait long while waiting for the pottery to be fired.

Directions: From central Hanoi, you can take the Vinh Tuy Bridge or Thanh Tri Bridge. This is one of the oldest citadels in Vietnam, built by King Thuc An Duong Vuong in the 3rd century BC to serve as the capital of the Au Lac kingdom. The citadel was built in a spiral shape (hence called Loa Citadel), said to have nine rings, with a deep moat below the outer walls that allowed boats to pass through. Today, only three earthen rings remain in Co Loa, where archaeologists have found tens of thousands of bronze arrowheads, plowshares, iron axes, and animal bones.
